Here at Stock surgery we have a highly specified operating theatre. It is the perfect environment for all forms of operation where local anaesthetic is used, including no scalpel vasectomy. We have provided community surgical services with expert advice and support since 2008 and Dr Acorn has performed many thousands of vasectomies during that time. We choose to use more expensive items such as superior instruments, superior antiseptic, extra fine anaesthetic instillation equipment and fertility clinic testing of fresh sample rather than postal testing. That way we feel sure our service is unparalleled. We find a large percentage of bookings are following recommendation by previous impressed, happy patients.
We are located near to Chelmsford, Billericay and Brentwood. We have patients come to our facility from all over the UK and also from abroad.
The non-scalpel procedure is the most up to date technique for best possible outcomes and takes just 10 minutes. It is the procedure of choice because it has been shown to have a much lower failure rate AND a lower incidence of operative complications when compared to more traditional methods. NSV is the procedure you will have when you have your vasectomy with Dr Acorn at Stock Surgery; many clinics still use traditional methods only.
Before the procedure it is important to have done the following:
- Have shaved. Shave the scrotal skin and ideally also all pubic hair using a wet razor. It is better to do this 1 or 2 days beforehand
- Have a bath or shower on the day of the procedure
- Have eaten. Have breakfast prior to a morning booking and lunch prior to an afternoon booking
Immediately prior to the procedure, the operation is explained again in advance of signing the consent. Particular emphasis is placed on the potential permanence along with the possible complications.
The operating room has music playing and additionally conversation during the operation helps to distract from anxious thoughts and give a calm atmosphere for a pleasant experience!
We use an instrument called a hyfrecator which requires electrical energy to cut and cauterise to a fine accuracy. A vacuum system beside the operating site helps to ensure that all noxious fumes are removed from the air immediately.
To prepare for the procedure the patient is laid flat on the operating couch, the operating area is cleaned with high grade antiseptic and the area covered by an operating drape with just the scrotum exposed. The procedure itself takes less than 10 minutes. Using ultrafine equipment for minimal discomfort, a small area of skin and tubes are anaesthetised followed by operating on each tube pulled in turn through a single 4mm hole in the scrotal skin, made using the hyfrecator. Each tube is cauterised and divided in two. Any potential for discomfort is during the application of anaesthetic and is typically no worse than having a blood test. The anaesthetic should make the remainder of the procedure completely free of discomfort.
The hole in the skin does not require stitches and usually a bandage is applied at the end of the procedure to help limit the extent of bruising. This can be removed the next day and must be removed immediately if it feels too tight.
Before leaving, an information leaflet for aftercare along with paperwork required for providing a sample are given. The interval between appointment time and heading home afterwards is typically less than 30 minutes. It is strongly advised that transportation home is arranged – there is a small risk of fainting during the first hour after the procedure, do not drive during this time period.
Virtually all men will leave feeling the procedure was so much more straight forward and closer to pain-free than they could have imagined. When you get your vasectomy at Stock Surgery you are coming to the best place for a service where we have optimised the procedure and specialised our skills to give you an expert experience you will be recommending to all your friends.
